One of the most influential Islamic scholars in Northern Nigeria, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi may have just escaped a possible assassination attempt as a bomb blast hit the busy Alkali Road, Kaduna, minutes after he passed that way.

While the number of dead is uncertain, a witness, Abdullahi Kasimu reported between 15 and 30 possible deaths.

The blast happened close to the First Scan Diagnostic Clinic minutes after Sheikh Bauchi, a leader of Sufism in Nigeria, left the area after finishing his routine Ramadan Tafsir.

Sheikh Bauchi is one of the few Islamic scholars who openly backed President Jonathan’s bid for the presidency in 2011. Insiders have expressed surprise that Islamist group, Boko Haram, would have targeted him as he hardly speaks against the group.

Boko Haram has been waging an insurgency, largely confined to Nigeria’s North-East, since 2009.
