Adebayo Olusegun Oni, a former governor and a key chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today turned Ifaki-Ekiti in Ekiti State into a vibrant political centre as he formally abandoned the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oni is said to have taken the major step, which changes all political calculations in the state ahead of next month’s governorship contest, along with about 25,000 of his supporters.
He and his supporters at the event in Ifaki-Ekiti received the APC flag.
Our sources point out that in just 48hrs, the membership of the PDP in the state has altered dramatically in the wake of critical defections to the APC of Mr. Oni, and Taiwo Olatunbosun, over the weekend. Olatunbosu was said to have left for the APC because he cannot stand Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who is the PDP candidate in the June 21 gubernatorial poll.
Governor Kayode Fayemi today described Mr. Oni’s arrival in the APC as a huge victory for the party as the election approaches. He stated that the former governor would be welcomed to the APC at an enlarged rally on May 21st 2014.
