Ahead of the 2015 Oscars, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), has approved a twelve-man committee of Nollywood stakeholders, the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC), paving the way for Nigerian entries to be considered for the world’s most prestigious prizes for films.
What this means is that; starting next year, indigenous Nigerian movies will begin featuring in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards, otherwise called "The Oscars".
This was made known during a press conference held in Lagos on April 29, 2014, to introduce the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee and their mission.
The twelve-man committee who will select one Nollywood movie each year to be submitted for the Oscars, include Chineze Anyaene, Ngozi Okafor, Olumide Amure, Ramsey Nouah, Kene Mkparu, Emeka Mba, Chioma Ude, Akin Salami, Mildred Okwo, Biola Alabi, Charles Novia and Shaibu Husseini.
“It is a great opportunity for Nigeria to have a voice in the international film arena”, said Chineze Anyaene, film maker and committee chairperson.
Hussein added that the selected movie will compete with 76 others from other countries, of which the best five will be nominated by the Academy, and the winner announced at the ceremony. He also stressed that the major criterion for the category is qualifying movies must have not less than 51 per cent indigenous language and must have been screened at the Cinemas in the country for not less than 7 days.
