PDP To 'Sanction' Andy Ubah
Andy Uba
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the party will sanction Senator Andy Ubah for encouraging acts of indiscipline and illegality.
Two parallel governorship primaries of the party had taken place in Anambra State last weekend under the chairmanships of Ejike Oguebeogu and Ken Emeakayi.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recognised the Oguebeogu faction and attended its primaries, which elected Mr. Ubah as its governorship candidate for theNovember 16 election in the state.
However, the party officials attended the Emeakayi faction primaries which elected Mr. Tony Nwoye as its candidate for the same election.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, Monday, the party's interim National Organising Secretary Hamisu Abubakar, said it would sanction Mr. Ubah for encouraging acts of indiscipline and illegality.
Abubakar's comment might be as a result of Mr Ubah's disregard for the directive given by the party that all aspirants should attend the party-recognised primaries.
The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, had announced Mr. Nwoye as the party's candidate for the forthcoming election.
Speaking during the submission of the result of the primaries by the Chairman of the Anambra State Congress Committee and Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema, to the party's National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja Monday, Tukur said: "Go and tell the world that Tony Nwoye is the winner and the candidate of the PDP in the November 16 governorship election."
While praising the committee for a job well done, the national chairman said: "Your conduct gave us hope and vindicated our members that the party belongs to the people; that's what democracy demands. It is the will of the people according to the slogan of our party that power belongs to the people. The people shall decide who represents them at any level. It cannot be otherwise, considering the quality of people we sent to Anambra State. The people have spoken."
According to him, "This is what we promised the people because the party belongs to the people. The party belongs to the people and let the owners of the party decide as they have done. The people have spoken and decided. This is what democracy is all about. This is the slogan of the party; power belongs to the people”.
Giving a report of how the primaries were conducted Shema said 902 delegates were accredited with 14 statutory delegates which made a total of 916 for the primaries, adding that of the figure, Nwoye polled 498 votes to come first, while Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu polled 357 to emerge second, with Alex Obeoguli coming third with 13 votes. He said Walter Okoke scored 7 votes, Josephine Anenih polled 6 votes, and Agape Kramer and Senator polled one vote each.
Shema said Mr. Ubah was absent at the primaries, which took place at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital, adding that the accreditation took place at the Women Centre in the town.
He said the party invited INEC, but directed those present to ask the commission why it did not honour the invitation.
