Usher Raymond V with his grandmother, Jonetta Patton (Splash News)Usher's son is back to doing what 5-year-old boys do.
One week after Usher Raymond V was involved in a harrowing pool accident at his father's Atlanta home, during which his arm became lodged in the drain and he nearly drowned, the boy was spotted out for some fun.Except for a thick bandage covering his right arm, Usher V looked like a typical young boy as he exited Mighty Jumps indoor party and play center on Monday. He had on camouflage shorts and sneakers as well as a blue T-shirt for the outing, during which he was accompanied by Usher's mother, Jonetta Patton, and carried toys in his hand.
Monday was a busy day for the boy ― it was also his first day of school, his mom, Tameka Foster, noted on Twitter.
The end of summer break was a dramatic one for little Usher V, who spent six days recovering after nearly drowning at his father's home on August 5. After an aunt, a housekeeper, and another woman tried unsuccessfully to free him, two contractors working at "The Voice" mentor's house pulled him to safety and performed CPR.
One of those heroes, Eugene Stachurski, is speaking out about the incident He was installing sound equipment for Usher when he heard the commotion outside, dove into the pool, and freed the unconscious boy. He and his colleague Ben Crews administered CPR on the boy until paramedics arrived.
"I am just glad Usher's son is alive," Stachurski, 35, said in a statement to CNN.
He also told TMZ, "I thank God I was there to do something."
Usher previously thanked both men by name in his own statement shortly after the ordeal.
The near-drowning also reignited the custody battle between Usher and his ex-wife Foster. She filed for an emergency custody hearing after the incident, seeking primary custody of the couple's two children. (Usher was awarded primary custody in 2012.) However, a judge ruled on Friday that the pair's current custody status would remain in place.
The incident has been especially traumatizing for Foster. Last summer, her 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, who was Usher's stepson, was fatally struck in the head by a jet ski and died.
