The kidnappers engaged the police in a gun duel.
The Police in Delta State on Wednesday said it rescued six kidnapped persons, including a mother and her two kids, from their captors on Obiaruku Road, Obinoba.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Lucky Uyabeme, told newsmen in Asaba that the victims were rescued on Tuesday.
He said they were kidnapped around Ekpoma and Igbanke towns in Edo and were being taken them to an unknown destination in Delta when the police intercepted them.
Mr. Uyabeme named the woman as Glory Barry and her children: Zoryii, 3, and Oremene, 2.
“Police received information that some suspected kidnappers operating in a sky blue Siena bus, red Nissan Primera and red Kia Cerato cars kidnapped some persons around Ekpoma and Igbanke towns in Edo and headed toward Delta.
“Sequel to the information, the Special Anti-kidnapping Unit went in search of the hoodlums and intercepted them at Obinoba,” he said.
The spokesperson said the police had a gun duel with the suspects during which the kidnappers were forced to abandon their victims.
He said the hoodlums escaped with the Cerato car, and the six persons rescued unhurt are: Aiwehoe Walter, Igbinedion Vincent, Cyrracus Osigwe, Glory Barry, three-year-old Zoryii Barry and Oremene Barry,” he said.
He said that a police officer, who sustained bullet injury on his leg during the incident, was in a stable condition and responding to treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Mr. Uyabeme said that items recovered from the hoodlums included the two vehicles and two handsets.
The spokesman said that police was on their trail and would intensify effort to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that the case would soon be transferred to the Edo Police Command for further investigations.
He restated the command’s commitment to fighting criminals and called for the support of the people of the state to enable the police to succeed.
